Under Colorado Revised Statute §15-19-106, "Disposition of Abandoned Cremated Remains of Veterans," funeral professionals have a meaningful opportunity to ensure that unclaimed veterans in their care are identified and buried with full military honors.
This law allows recognized veterans' remains-recovery organizations to work with funeral homes, crematories, cemeteries, and coroner's offices to review identifying information on unclaimed cremated remains and determine whether any belong to veterans eligible for burial in a national or state veterans' cemetery.
Participation requires no additional labor or research from your establishment. The Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 1071 Honors Burial Project conducts all record searches and provides a complete inventory of remains reviewed. Once a veteran is identified, the project coordinates directly with the Honor Bell Foundation, the Patriot Guard Riders, and the National Cemetery Administration to arrange a dignified burial with full military honors.
Funeral homes and crematories wishing to participate should contact the Honors Burial Project director directly.
